Bodenschatz, Sr., who typically added a not-so-soft tap from his cane on the head of the grandchild he was acknowledging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Edward was the youngest of the twelve children of Andrew Michael Bodenschatz, Jr. (whom we\u2019ll call \u201cAMB\u201d for short) and Margaret \u201cMaggie\u201d Bodenschatz, n\u00e9e Schmidt, both of whom were immigrants to the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AMB emigrated from the Bayreuth region of Upper Franconia (now part of Bavaria, Germany) in the spring of 1867. He established a farm in a rural area located in the Pennsylvania hills just above the towns of Summerhill and Wilmore \u2014 stops on the Main Line of the Pennsylvania Railroad that connected Philadelphia with Pittsburgh via Harrisburg.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:65%\"><div class=\"wp-block-image shadow-effect-br2\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"426\" height=\"497\" src=\"https:\/\/thebodenschatzfamily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/AMB.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thebodenschatzfamily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/AMB.jpg 426w, https:\/\/thebodenschatzfamily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/AMB-257x300.jpg 257w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 426px) 100vw, 426px\" \/><\/figure><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:75%\">\n<p>AMB is pictured above, working in one of his fields during his later years. The rural area where he settled comprised parts of two adjacent townships (Summerhill Township and Croyle Township) and is known informally as \u201cNew Germany.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maggie, who also grew up in a town in the Bayreuth region of Upper Franconia, Bavaria, journeyed to join AMB in New Germany about a year after he arrived. They married in the summer of 1868 in the German Catholic Church, the Church of the Immaculate Conception, which served as the center of their farming community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maggie passed away in 1909 at the age of 59.
